My Scarecrow - KEN12

Gourdy Gordon

Gourdy Gordon - 2nd place getter traditional categoryAfter deciding that I was to be building a scarecrow, I spoke to Isabell Shipard (The Herb Lady) over at Nambour about how I thought a gourd would make a good scarecrow head, so she gave me one. Isn't that sweet.

I had figured that I may want to bring my Scarecrow to the Kenilworth Country Market sometimes as a personal mascot to help me to promote the very idea of low food miles, so I wanted to design him as a portable 'crow. My adorable husband assisted with Gourdy's structural engineering .

Gourdy Gordon would love you to join in on thinking globally and acting locally.

My Scarecrow - AM 04

By…Rachael Joy Grieger

4th Place Childrens CategoryOne day, very close to the scarecrow competition, I went to get our mail out of our post box. That is where the story of my scarecrow began. In our PO. Box I found a small application form for any one to enter into the competition.  Well, I begged mom all the way home,” Can I do it? Can I do it? Pleeaasssssssssssse???” Mom only said, “I’ll think about it.”

Up in my room that night I filled out the form, (just in case.) The next morning when I got up I asked mom again, and she finally said yes!!! So I dug around in my drawer looking for the brightest pants I could find. Then I also dug around for an old shirt of mine that I didn’t like wearing anymore.

When I had come up with the clothes I put them in the back of the ute right away so I could drive down later in the day and make up my scarecrow. I also found some boot pop-overs and mom’s old boots that she was going to grow some parsley in, I also put them in the car. Mom then suggested to me that I use the old shovel down by the potting shed as a head and face. I loved that idea and ran down right away to get it. I grabbed an old rag, and drew a face on it, using permanent marker pens. The last thing I grabbed as I was running out the door was a hat off the shelf.

Then I jumped into the car, took the dogs with me, and drove down to the road to make up my scarecrow. Woops, I left the star picket and rammer up at the house. Instead of driving up, I ran as fast as I could, grabbed the things I needed, and ran back down to the gate.

I started with ramming in the picket and then tying the shovel to it, I then tied another stick crosswise as the arms. Then I found two short sticks and poked them in the pants to be used as supports. I then used hay that was already in the back of the ute and stuffed the pants of my scarecrow. Now I was ready to tie the shirt to the pants with baling twine, and stuff it as well.  I finally had the body of my scarecrow made and all I had left, was to add the head, and put on the boots. I did the head first, that wasn’t so hard. I added a new mop head as the hair and then put the hhat on top. All that was left now was putting on the boots.

That became a lot harder than what I thought it would be. Because I had put sticks in the legs, I couldn’t bend the legs to put the boots on. So I had to lift up the scarecrow, just so I could get the boots on!!!

I had a big feeling of accomplishment when I finally stood back to see my scarecrow.  The reason I had to send a photo in, was because the judging day was in the middle of the muster happenings, and we lived out past the muster. So the judges couldn’t come out all the way to where we lived, just to judge one scarecrow.

Now I am planning to take down my scarecrow, because it has died from all the rain.
